Deborah Sharp Libby
Early Childhood Language and Reading Expert
A leading expert in reading, Dr. Libby graduated from The University of Pittsburgh with a Doctorate in Reading, Language Arts and Children's Literature. She has her Masters in Reading, a Reading Specialist Certificate and a Bachelors degree in Elementary and Early Childhood Education from The Ohio State University. While working in higher education for 17 years, Dr. Libby taught elementary education courses at The University of Pittsburgh and both undergraduate and graduate courses in topics such as early childhood and elementary reading, language arts and children's literature at Slippery Rock University. Dr. Libby has worked as an elementary teacher, and as a freelance writer creating teaching guides to accompany reading and science material for elementary classrooms. Currently living outside of Pittsburgh with her husband and three daughters, she works with students in literature groups focusing on comprehension skills and conducts workshops for teachers.
Lise Eliot
Early Childhood Mental Development Expert
Dr. Lise Eliot is Associate Professor of Neuroscience at The Chicago Medical School of Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine & Science. A Chicago native, she received an A.B. degree from Harvard University, a Ph.D. from Columbia University, and did post-doctoral research at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. In addition to teaching and writing, Dr. Eliot lectures widely about children's brain and mental development. In addition to more than 50 published peer-reviewed journal articles and magazine pieces, Eliot is the author of two books, "Pink Brain, Blue Brain," which examines sex differences and children's gender development and "What's Going On In There," which charts babies' brain development from conception onward and its relationship to children's emerging mental abilities. Dr. Eliot and her husband live outside Chicago with their daughter and two sons.
Helen Boehm
Psychologist, Author, and Parenting Resource Expert
Dr. Helen Boehm is a distinguished psychologist and national authority on toys, play and the impact of media on children. She leads the independent advisory service, “FCC Ready”, which certifies educational programming compliance and advises on the development of children’s toys, television and digital products. Dr. Helen was the Senior Vice President for Public Responsibility and Standards at MTV Networks/Nickelodeon and, prior to that, headed Education and Public Service for the Fox Broadcasting Company. Along with her former Fox colleague, John Walsh, she continues an active role with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. She is a familiar parenting resource on programs like "Today" and "Good Morning America" and has given testimony in front of Congress on advertising to children and the impact of sexuality and violence on young audiences. She also served as Vice President of the Children's Advertising Review Unit of the Council of Better Business Bureaus. The author of Fearless Parenting for the New Millennium and The Right Toys: A Guide to Selecting the Best Toys for Children, she has also written articles on kids' media and play for Psychology Today, Working Mother and Redbook. A graduate of Boston University, Dr. Helen received her masters and doctoral degrees from Columbia University and taught at the City University of New York. She lives in New York and Florida - but her focus group of two great kids is now, unfortunately, all grown up!
Carla C. Johnson
Science and STEM Expert
Dr. Carla Johnson is an internationally renowned scholar in science education and STEM education policy implementation. She is a Professor of Science Education and Associate Director of the Center for Research and Engagement in Science and Mathematics Education (CRESME) at Purdue University. She also serves as Editor of the School Science and Mathematics Journal. Dr. Johnson’s research has focused on educational reform through providing high-quality professional development for teachers of science, or specifically examining how students of various backgrounds and abilities can excel in science with effective instruction. She also conducts research on advancing STEM learning programs nationwide. As a STEM expert, she has authored more than 60 publications including several books, research manuscripts, and a curriculum series. She has received the Outstanding Early Career Scholar (2006), and Excellence in Integration of Science and Mathematics (2012) awards from the School Science and Mathematics Association, as well as the Outstanding Science Teacher Educator (2013) and Impact of Educational Research on Practice Awards from the Association of Science Teacher Education.
